Short of repeatedly hitting my temple with a hammer...

... does anyone have a natural migraine remedy that actually works? I'm battling a toughy today and it's really getting in the way of enjoying the "little" things in life like... oh, ummm, let me see... writing and eating.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Now, I must sit in a darkened room and visualize calm blue waters or some such nonsense. Wish me luck.

I can offer one anecdotal remedy: a friend who suffered from migraines once took an accidental O.D. of aspirin -- not a lethal amount, but perhaps three times what she should have taken -- and swore it cured her migraine instantly. Obviously, you would need to talk to your doctor about this, but my friend said that a lot of aspirin really did it for her. I was amazed that her solution should have been so simple, but there it is.

I take no medications.
So you won't like my advice.
Watching a film to divert your attention, going to bed early, walking on FRESH air (a crowded city do not count), refraining from sweets...

Mary: I try to shy away from aspirin, as it makes my stomach hurt. But if it gets too bad, I'm all for it! Thanks!

Szelsofa: I don't usually take meds, either. And I did most of what you suggest... I guess I'll have to wait this sucker out! Thanks for your thoughts!

Do you know the accupressure points for head pain? They don't SOLVE my migraine problems, but they sure help. The points are in your hands, in the webbing between thumb and forefinger. Please write to me at carolie(at)wordmagix(dot)com for further clarification, if interested.

800mg of ibuprophen has helped me a bit as well. Prescription Imetrex? Not at all.

I have found that certain foods trigger migraines for me...there's a large list, and I removed them ALL from my diet, and reintroduced them one at a time. For some folks, the trigger is chocolate, for others bananas, avocados, aged cheeses, etc. I've found that for *me*, bananas are a trigger, which is a shame, as I love them.

Luck to you, and a swift lessening of pain!!

My father has migraines. I have a 50/50 chance of developing them at some point. I'm sorry you suffer these.
I heard about what Carolie said somewhere else. I've also heard that you have to treat them just as you feel that they're about to start (other words, it's so much harder to treat once they're full on)

Hope this one goes away smoothly.

Damn too late to help but for further notice lavender and peppermint essential oils work wonders. Mix 5-6 drops lavender and 2-3 drops peppermint into your hand with a bit of carrier oil. Rub along your temple and along the back of your neck line. This works for me and some other people I know -- but I don't get massive headaches just normal.

So many things can trigger a migraine, can't they? I find that sleep deprivation and weather changes tend to be most problematic for me. Damn that barometer!

Church Lady:

Thanks for the happy thoughts. I think they worked - the migraine is officially "outta here"!

Jennifer:

Awesome advice... I think I'll stock up on some of those essential oils! Thank you, babe!

As a sufferer myself, I can't say for sure what will work for you, but what works for me is to pop one Excedrin as the light starts in my eyes, grab a cold, wet washcloth and paste it across my forehad (covering the eyes), elevate the head with an extra pillow, and cover up. The worst part for me is the nausea from the movement in the eyes, so I take that time to concentrate on my meditation mantra (you can make one up, but make it soothing), and trying to visualize myself going through my meditation process. It works - the stomach is spared any upset.

Another thing I managed to do was to get outside in the fresh air the minute the headache starts. Breathe in slowly and as you exhale, relax all the muscles you have tensed in your neck and shoulders. It helps. It's what I do when I get one and can't lie down.

I'm glad you're feeling better. :)
