Why do semi-popped, burnt kernels taste so much better than all the rest?

Eww-- I don't like burnt popcorn. But for some crazy reason my youngest does. She loves eating the unpopped kernels too. (Jason keeps warning her that she could crack a tooth...) :P

I don't know about popcorn but this very moment I'm smelling burnt broccoli and st.patricks corned beef and it's not as salty sweet.
